My
next big find was a colony of Chanterelle
mushrooms which
was also growing in our next door neighbor's
woods. From a
distance I spotted something pumpkin-colored on
their property.
I knew that it couldn't be pumpkins, so I
ventured over to investigate.
I was awe-struck! Before me lay a host of
Chanterelle mushrooms
of various sizes. Chanterelles are a popular
mushroom and are fairly
common to find along roadsides and woodsy areas.
These bright
orange mushrooms are sought-after as a culinary
delicacy.
Here
is a close-up of the largest Chanterelle
which is slightly past its prime, since white
mold
is growing on its surface.
This speciman measured 9" in diameter.
It was simply outrageous!
This is image and the one below show
the mushrooms' underlying gills.
