Garden Walk- Fall 2011
Glimpses into late fall in our backyard garden
where life is simple, down-to-earth, and wholesome!

To every [thing there is] a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:
A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up [that which is] planted;
Ecclesiastes 3:1,2

Our compost bins
Composting is part of our daily life. We keep all
kitchen scraps from our vegan meal preps and turn them into
useable, rich 'food' for our soil. Compost is one of the best
soil amendments, doesn't cost anything, and is easy to make.
While our compost bins are on the rustic side and lack
aesthetics, they are a practical, economical solution.

I have four bins and while one bin is busy 'working'
(settling to make compost), I begin another.

Bin #1 on the far left will be ready to use next spring.
Bin #2 is just completed and will take about a year to process.
Bind #3 is ready to use.
Bin # 4 I have just started and will build it up with kitchen scraps
through the winter into the next garden season.

I compost 'Eliot Coleman' style as outlined in his book, Four Seasons Gardening.

As per his method, I use straw to layer the scraps...no leaves, since they
promote fungus. I cover the bins with lumber tarps which
are available without charge from the lumber yard.
