'YOUR LIVER, YOUR HEALTH'
Exploring the vital connection
October 11, 2012

it is damp and wet as fall rains make
their annual descent here in central Maine. While
it is cool enough to fire up the wood stove, we
instead pull out sweat shirts, flannel jackets, and
wool sweaters. Call us thrifty or just plain 'Scotch'
(which we proudly are!), we figure that there will
be time and cold enough to warrant serious heat.
In the meantime, it is 'snuggle' weather as winter
slowly makes it way to the Northeast.
the seasons change and temperatures
begin to dip, those of us at The Living Way are
in our usual mode of preparing for the colder
months. With delight and eager anticipation, the
late fall harvest is coming in: grapes fresh from
the vine (!), u-pick apples, and so much more!
Suffice to say, we are 'grabbing garden goodies'
and savoring our backyard harvest while it lasts.
Soon it will be time to plant our garlic before
saying good-bye to our 2012 garden.
healthy life continues on with this month's
HANDS-ON HEALTH meeting, 'YOUR LIVER,
YOUR LIFE.' For several months I have been
contemplating this presentation, albeit a lecture
on my part, that will educate about one of the
most important organs in the body. Years of
experience as a Health Minister have convinced
me that there is little understanding about the liver
and how it affects personal health. In an effort to
fill this gap, I will give the inside story about the
liver and explain its role in the body. Plan to join
us for this enlightening evening! Learn more
about our HANDS-ON HEALTH meeting here.
an eye to surviving winter in healthy style,
this month's featured article is entitled,
'Building a Strong Immune System.' If the
body's immune system is compromised, it is
more susceptible to sickness, pain, and disease.
Avoiding these pitfalls is possible, but it takes
personal effort. This article offers insight as
well as practical solutions for boosting the
body's defenses. For the sake of your better
health, read up!
have missed health-related news reports
lately, selected links to important articles follow
along in this newsletter. Of particular note is the
growing GMO controversy, an issue that begs
personal attention as well as action. Allowing
for the increased corruption of our nation's
food supply, know what you are eating lest it
kills you! In case you are not aware, commodities
are being morphed into strange anamolies
that are mistakenly called 'food,' when in fact
they are poisons. We encourage you to
investigate what is happening to our food
supply in order to avoid 'food fallout' that
could be fatal. Also keep in mind that due to
poor growing conditions across much of
America, food prices are taking a sharp rise.
Plan accordingly! Lastly, check out important
updates on our Radiation News page.
lighter note, our latest Garden 2012
Log this month is short and sweet. Due to
inclement weather and an unusally heavy
schedule, activity in the backyard has been
abbreviated at best. Nevertheless, good
edibles of all kinds are still coming in the
house: several varieties of kale (at last!),
assorted (beautiful!) herbs, many leeks,
hardy scallions, loads of nettles, and a
few brave tomatoes, and more. Read all
about the latest ventures of this backyard
winter preparations in full swing, those
of us at The Living Way are doing well to
keep up with the seasonal change. We continue
to handle the garden harvest, being thankful for
a bountiful supply of home-growns. The addition
of a high-powered blender plus a beautiful
OXO Mandolin are making food preps quick,
easy, and fun! Happily we are harvesting our
Concord grapes which, for the most part, are
surviving torrential-style fall rains. Total yield
thus far is 114.5lbs, most of which has gone into
rich, luscious juice and delicious roll-ups. Suffice
to say, we are savoring the last of our backyard
harvest in celebration of YHVH's goodness!
While many parts of the country suffered great
loss, we are thankful for His mercy in giving us
another good growing year.
garden season comes to a close, may
we thus be increasingly mindful of our Great
Provider Who makes living well possible. He
Who made us has given us the goodness of
the land to prosper in the fullest sense. Scripture
tells us, 'It is better to trust in YHVH than to put
confidence in man' (Psalms 118:8), and this is
rightfully so. Judging from the amount of human
suffering as well as the political climate of our
nation and the world, it is good to place our trust
and allegiance where it counts. Healing our
hurting world begins on an individual basis,
when we turn our hearts back to YHVH.
Therefore let the true healing begin! With
YHVH on our side, we can be healthy, happy,
and bring hope to a dying world!
the mercy of YHVH is from everlasting to
them that reverance him and his righteousness to
To such as keep his covenant, and
those that remember his
commandments to do them.
Psalms 103:17, 18

Believe it or not,
protecting the body from sickness,
pain, and disease is not necessarily an outward
practice of avoiding sick people as much as it is
an inner exercising of the body's natural defense
mechanism. How successful we are in activating
this remarkable mechanism ultimately determines
our wellness. Let us see what this means!

Dirt: Farming to the Glory of
God - Biblical Farming & Gardening: A How-To
Thanks to author Noah Sanders, returning to
garden has just found new heights. Whether or
not you are a 'born-again' believer, Noah's approach
to good stewardship of the land is both admirable
and practical. Find inspiration as well as how-to's
for growing crops, farm construction, and general
land management. Simple in approach and entirely
unique, this book would make a great winter read!

Recipe: Oat Groat Burgers
Winter is upon us and
with it comes the need
for heartier eating. Here is a recipe that fills
the bill by filling the tummy. These burgers
are easy to make and entirely nutritious. Eat
'em plain or fancy them up with healthy toppings.
Warm them in a dehydrator for an extra thrill
when the temperatures are chill! Either way,
2 cups whole/raw oat
2 large stalks celery
2-3 medium-large carrots
1 medium red onion
few generous slices red pepper
2 very large garlic or equivalent
1/4 cup fresh parsley
few stems fresh Sage
few stems fresh Winter Savory, Rosemary, or Thyme
2 Tbsp Hemp oil
203 Tbsp Chia Seeds
1 Tbsp fresh Lemon or orange juice
1 rounded tsp kelp powder
few shakes of Himalayan salt
2 tsp raw honey
Soak oat groats overnight in purified water.
Rinse, drain, and set aside (note: if the oats
are not soft after a 24hr. soak, rinse, drain,
and soak another 24hr. Some oat groats are
harder hulls than others).
Finely chop all
ingredients except oat groats
in a food processor, then add the groats and
process again until completely blended. Form
into burgers and garnish with ground sesame
seeds, sprouts, paprika, dulse or whatever.
Makes about 5 large burgers. Adjust ingredients
and toppings to suit your tastebuds!
