2.
Ministry update
Dear
Friends,
Bright
skies and warm temperatures with a hint
of cooler nights remind us that summer is slipping
away into shades of fall. It is a bittersweet season
as the garden yields up yet another abundant
harvest before going to sleep for the winter. Thus
we savor these celebratory days of summer by
eating extra 'raws' while they are fresh from the
field!
Though
newly arrived, September is already shaping
up to be a supremely healthy month, filled with a
variety of invigorating events. Kicking off the
healthy
fare is our HANDS-ON HEALTH meeting
this Thursday
that will feature the video, 'Emergency
Remedies'
by Dr. Gwen Scott, ND. Dr. Scott shows how to
naturally treat common health problems such as cuts,
burns, broken bones, and more. Learn how green beans,
onions, turmeric, cloves, and household products can
naturally solve personal health crises. This video
contains
vital knowledge that can save lives. Bring family and
friends to learn simple secrets to home health care.
More information about our HANDS-ON HEALTH
meeting is posted here.
Later
in this month I will be presenting a live food
demonstration at the Central Maine Garden
Club
in Belgrade. Be assured that what I blend up
will be
seasonably tasty and nutritious! Consider attending
this naturally- inspiring event! For more details,
call
Sharon Fetterman, 873-4202.
A surprise highlight of
the month will be the appearance
of Dr. Brian Clement, Director of the Hippocrates
Health Institute in West Palm Beach,
Florida. Dr. Clement
will be lecturing in Belfast and Unity, Maine. As
many
may recall, we hosted Dr. Clement as a special guest
speaker in September 2010. We are delighted that he
is returning to Maine to educate on the merits of a
raw,
plant-based diet. Consider hearing Dr. Clement while
he is in-state. It could be the experience of your
lifetime!
See details of Dr. Clement's Maine schedule here.
Our
feature article this month is 'Preserving the
Harvest: Fermented Foods.' In light of the
incoming
yield from the field, I felt to share a few ways that
food
can be stored to extend its life. Fermenting, also
known
as culturing, is a traditional, popular
method. Cultured
foods are tasty, nutritious, and health-full. Those
looking
for food preservation ideas will find this article
handy,
since it contains information about the fermentation
process as well as basic 'how-to's.' Read up to learn
how fun, easy, and beneficial fermented foods can be!
Updates on our website include photos of our Live Food
Picnic, our Garden 2011 Log (be sure to
take our new
Garden Walk), and our LIVING Recipes page. As you
may notice, I am revising our LIVING Recipes section,
complete with photos and new recipe uploads. Look
for this grand make-over along the way. In the mean-
time, links to news articles and videos of healthy
interest follow along in this newsletter. Allowing
for the
challenging times in which we live, commit yourself
to
becoming as informed as possible. Please investigate
the links with the red bullets and be sure to review
our Radiation page for updates.
As for life at The Living Way,
the garden harvest is
abundant and coming in quickly. Our days are long and
eventful as we celebrate the season by building big,
healthy salads, blending raw soups and smoothies, as
well as creating exciting, new entrees. Nettle,
basil, or
arugula pesto anyone? How about fresh mango-peach
pie,
peach-blueberry cobbler or Maine wild blueberry pie?
A
veritable culinary explosion is taking place in our
kitchen.
Stay tuned for details!
In
closing, it is a great day to be alive and especially
healthy! Dedicate each day to building a better life
for
yourself and your family. Savor the fall season by
enjoying the fruit of the harvest in its raw,
natural, pure
state! This is what living is all about. Improve the
quality
of your life one step at a time or by leaps! If a
confirmed
SAD-er and junk-food addict like Bill Clinton can
change
his ways and adopt a raw, plant-based diet, so can
you!
Choose to be healthy!

3) Feature
Article: ''Preserving the Harvest:
Fermented Foods"
Extending the life of
food for future use has long
been a goal and practice of man. For many people,
storing food is a way of life that is both practical
and necessary. Allowing for the season and the
growing reports of possible food shortages, now
may be the time to consider ways to preserve
the harvest. Fermented foods are an ideal solution
to extending the life of living foods year 'round.

Resources
Common Ground Country Fair
Attention Mainers! One of New England's
foremost
agricultural events, the Common Ground Country
Fair is September 23-25. Sponsored by the Maine
Organic Farmers and Organic Growers Association
(MOFGA), the fair is a classic celebration of the
harvest, complete with agricultural displays, events,
workshops, special speakers, exhibitors, food
vendors,
and more. Treat yourself by meeting local farmers,
shop green merchants, view livestock, and learn how
to live on the land naturally. For more information
about the Common Ground Country Fair, visit
MOFGA's website here. If you live
outside of Maine,
search the internet for an agricultural fair near
you.

5) Buying tips
and order info
FORKS OVER KNIVES
There is good news! The popular, award-winning
film FORKS OVER KNIVES which exposes
the
health risks inherent in the Standard American
Diet while extoling the health benefits of a plant-
based diet is now available as an online stream.
See and hear two of America's top
researchers
and nutritional experts, Dr. Colin T. Campbell and
Dr. Caldwell Esselstyne unravel the cause of heart
disease, cancer, diabetes, and more. For good
and for ill, learn the consequences of diet and
how you can avoid popular killer diseases through
proper diet. See FORKS OVER KNIVES here.
Winter
Storage
Take advantage of the fall harvest by buying
in
quantity direct from local farmers. Many growers
are happy to sell their winter crops in bulk as a
price-saving courtesy. Carrots, beets, turnip,
onions,
daikon, etc. make good winter storage foods. Revive
cold storage skills by inventing a root cellar and
filling
it with live edibles that will carry you through to
spring!
Equipment purchases
If you want to purchase additional
equipment,
including juicers, dehydrators, VitaMix,
sprouters,
etc., consider placing your order through us.
Your order can be drop-shipped in a matter of
days. Call us for more information.
